The Inca royal ceremonial site, Choquequirao sits high on a remote ridge in Peru's rugged Cordillera Vilcabamba. This is considered to be a sister center to Machu Picchu and was mapped and investigated by Hiram Bingam in 1909, two years before he found the latter. It has recently been renovated by the Peruvian government and is becoming an adventure travel destination.
