ANTARCTICA. Norman Vaughan, 88, exhausted as he climbs towards summit on first ascent of Mount Vaughan, a 10,302-foot mountain near the South Pole that was named for him by Richard Byrd in honor of his participation in Byrd's 1929 expedition to fly over the Pole.
